_____________
when I was a kid as I stumbled over
these verses it was the melody
& rhythm which caught my ear
and the sense of its sorrow, &
sadness
and its bitter
truth
~ later reading the play, not
lately it changed the context
but not the sense of its
truth ~ the sense of hurt
before ingratitude which is
akin to King Lear's ~
the words are ringing yet
how often I've heard them
repeated in this head,
as for heart,
well heart, yes,
"the heart above all things is deceptive"
~ one knows and never knows the heart ~ .
_______________
Thou art not so unkind
As man's ingratitude;
Thy tooth is not so keen,
Because thou art not seen, 5
Although thy breath be rude.
Heigh ho! sing, heigh ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then heigh ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly. 10
Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky,
That dost not bite so nigh
As benefits forgot:
Though thou the waters warp,
Thy sting is not so sharp 15
As friend remember'd not.
Heigh ho! sing, heigh ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then heigh ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.
